Lorem ipsum generator
Generate Lorem ipsum placeholder text as paragraphs, sentences, or words for layouts and mockups.
Pick paragraphs, sentences, or words, up to 100 of them. The same settings always give you the same text.
Paragraphs, sentences, or words of filler text
Open the page and five paragraphs of Lorem ipsum are already in “Result”. “Mode” sets the unit and “Amount” sets how many, from 1 to 100. Each sentence is 16 words ending in a period, each paragraph joins four sentences (64 words), and “Words” mode returns bare words with no final period. Five words give you Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, and “Copy result” or “Download TXT” takes it from there.
The text comes from a bank of 69 Latin words used in order, starting over from the top when they run out. That's why almost every sentence after the first starts in lowercase and none of them has commas: the second one opens with “dolore magna aliqua”. For a layout that doesn't matter, but if you need to check how real punctuation and capital letters look, you'll need real copy.
Lorem ipsum with HTML paragraph tags
Turn on “Wrap paragraphs in HTML” under “More options” and each paragraph comes wrapped in <p> and </p>, with a blank line between paragraphs. Paste it into an HTML file, an email template, or the code view of your site builder. The option only works in “Paragraphs” mode, so sentences and words come out unchanged. The tags stay as plain text in the box, and the page doesn't render them.
Same settings, same placeholder text
Nothing here is random. The same mode and amount give the same text today or next month, which helps when you compare two versions of a design and want the filler to stay put between screenshots. It also makes space easy to plan: three paragraphs are always 192 words, and 100 paragraphs, the maximum, are 6,400.
Use those numbers to fill a design to size. A blog template that expects around 300 words takes five paragraphs (320 words), and a short product description of about 50 words fits in three sentences (48). Each paragraph runs about 400 characters with spaces, which helps when a text box or a card has a character limit rather than a word count.
Where Lorem ipsum comes from
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin. It comes from “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, a philosophical work on good and evil that Cicero wrote in 45 BC. The original passage has the phrase “dolorem ipsum”, meaning “pain itself”. Cutting off the first syllable left “lorem”, which isn't a Latin word, and other words were changed, dropped, or added, so the passage can't be read as meaningful sentences.
When placeholder text helps and when it hurts
Filler text shows how space fills up before the content exists: an app screen, a blog template, a poster, or a slide deck for class. Since nobody reads it, feedback stays on the design instead of the words. It stops helping once someone has to read, judge, or publish the page, and these jobs need the real thing:
- Usability tests: people can't judge a screen they can't read
- Accessibility checks: a screen reader reads the Latin aloud as it is, so you can't tell whether the content makes sense
- Buttons and headlines: the real length of “Add to cart” or a product name changes the layout
- Copy-led pages: when a sales page or a menu depends on its words, a rough real draft tells you more than any filler
- Before launch: search your site or document for “lorem”, because a forgotten paragraph looks careless and search engines read it too
Frequently asked questions
What does Lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing, as a sentence. It's a scrambled piece of Cicero's “De finibus bonorum et malorum” from 45 BC. “Lorem” is what's left of “dolorem”, Latin for pain, after the first syllable was cut off, and the rest of the passage was shuffled and altered.
Can I get Lorem ipsum with HTML tags?
Yes. Choose Paragraphs mode and turn on Wrap paragraphs in HTML under More options. Each paragraph comes wrapped in HTML paragraph tags, ready to paste into your code. In Sentences and Words modes the option has no effect.
How many words are in a Lorem ipsum paragraph?
Here, 64: each paragraph is four sentences of 16 words. That makes the math quick. Five paragraphs are 320 words, and 100 paragraphs, the maximum, are 6,400 words. A sentence on its own is always 16 words.
Why do I get the same text every time?
The generator is fixed. It walks through the same 69-word bank in order, so the same settings give the same result. Change the mode or the amount for a different length. If you want different words on every try, use the random word generator instead.
Is it OK to leave Lorem ipsum on a live page?
No. It belongs in mockups. On a real page it confuses visitors and gives search engines nothing useful to read. Before you publish, search your document or site for “lorem” and replace every block with the final copy.
