Text faces made from characters
Kaomoji are Japanese-style text expressions that read upright. Keyboard emoticons such as :-) often read sideways. Lenny faces use a recognizable eyebrow-and-nose design and have a separate builder. To pair a face with fancy text, the font generator turns your words into bold, cursive and other styles.
What a kaomoji is made of
The word comes from Japanese: kao means face and moji means character. Each one is a tiny drawing built from letters and symbols borrowed from many writing systems. Spot the Greek ω in (。・ω・。), the Kannada ಥ in (ಥ﹏ಥ) and the Korean 눈, which means eye, in (눈_눈).
The paws in ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ are a Thai letter, and the face in ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is the Japanese katakana ツ. Most faces mix the same four parts:
- Outline: ( ) or ʕ ʔ
- Eyes: ◕ ^ • ಥ
- Mouth: ‿ ω ▽ ﹏
- Extras: arms like ノ or ヽ, blush like ˶, sparkles like ✧
Picks by mood: cute, happy, sad and more
Tap a mood to see the whole set, or type a word like “cat”, “hug” or “sparkle” in the search box. A few faces to start with:
A sad face softens bad news, a shrug says “no idea” without sounding rude, and a heart kaomoji turns a plain “thanks” into a warm one.
- Cute: (◕‿◕) (✿◡‿◡) ૮₍ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ₎ა
- Happy: (^▽^) ٩(◕‿◕。)۶ (≧◡≦)
- Love and hearts: ( ˘ ³˘)♥ (♡˙︶˙♡) (。♥‿♥。)
- Hugs: (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ (っ´▽`)っ (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
- Sad and crying: (。•́︿•̀。) (╥_╥) (ಥ﹏ಥ)
- Sleepy: (-ω-) zzZ (ᴗ˳ᴗ) ( ˘ω˘ )
- Cats, bunnies and bears: ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ (ᐢ•ᴗ•ᐢ) ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
- Classic emoticons: :) XD ^_^ :3
- Shrug: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌ ╮(︶▽︶)╭
Make a face your own
Kaomoji copy and paste like any other text, so you can edit one after you paste it. Swap the eyes, add arms or tack a sparkle on the end and the face becomes yours:
Build it in your notes app first, then copy the finished face into your bio or chat. Need more extras? Hearts, stars and arrows from the symbol library slot right into any face.
- Heart eyes: (◕‿◕) becomes (♥‿♥)
- A wave: (◕‿◕) becomes (◕‿◕)ノ
- A sparkle: (≧◡≦) becomes (≧◡≦)✧
- A sign-off: brb ٩(◕‿◕。)۶
Pick a face for the moment
The mood filters map neatly onto everyday chat moments. Use them as a shortcut when you know the vibe but not the face:
One face at the end of a message usually says more than three in a row, and the chat stays easy to read.
- Saying hi in a group chat: Wave, like ヾ(^-^)ノ
- Celebrating good news: Happy, like (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
- Reacting to a plot twist: Surprised, like Σ(°△°|||)
- Pretending to be mad at a friend: Angry, like (눈_눈)
- Lost in the conversation: Confused, like (⊙_☉)
Frequently asked questions
How do I copy a kaomoji?
Choose a mood or search for an expression, then select Copy. Paste it into a text field.
What's the difference between a kaomoji and an emoji?
A kaomoji is a face built from ordinary text characters, such as (^▽^), and you read it upright. An emoji is a picture character, sometimes a short sequence, that each app draws in its own style.
Why does a kaomoji look different after I paste it?
Kaomoji mix characters from several alphabets and symbol sets. If the app's font is missing one, you'll see a box ▯ or the face can shift out of shape. Try another expression from the same mood.
Can I pick one at random?
Yes. Select “Surprise me” to highlight a random expression from the current filter, then copy it.
Where can I use kaomoji?
Anywhere that accepts text: chats, comments, your bio or your username, as long as the app supports the characters. Some games and sites limit which characters a name can use, so test it there first.
